Pornography and Anti-Pornography

Heated debates are going on in several media and Indonesian milis (mailing lists) over the controversial draft of anti-pornography act (RUU APP- rancangan undang-undang anti pornografi). This note doesn’t want to make further commentary on the concerned issue, on what the pornoghraphy is and what’s not, etc. If you’re interested to join or follow the debates, however, you can watch it here. You gotta be familiar with Bahasa Indonesia, though. This note would only highlight things beneath the line of the contentious debates.
First, it seems to me that the cons, represented by the so-called moderates, are much more dominant than the pros. This only means that as far outsiders are concerned, Indonesia is still dominated by those who want to solve any disputes with cool minds. And therefore, this country is save.
Second, among the cons of the RUU APP, not all are those who actually agree with pornography or anything to do with it. They just dont like to see that the pros are dominated by those who are more known with its extreme religious perspective.
So, the pros and cons actually is not between those who agree and disagree with pornography per se, but between those moderates (muslims/nonmuslim) and the so-called fundamentalist.
Beneath the line, not many Indonesians, including the moderate ones, agree with the pornographic culture which they regard as the rotten egg of Western civilization they try to avoid imitating. But to prevent its presence by way of legal system is worrying ones to some because it can be used and exploited further by fundamentalist elements to make things worse to serve their own purpose.
