The 6.2 strong earthquake in Yogyakarta/jogjakarta has caused an estimate of 2000 people killed. The number is also reported by CNN whose journalist has been on the ground since last night. But CNN also reports from other sources that the casualties is no more than 400.

Whatever the case, the number of casualties is significant enough as far as natural disaster in Java island goes.

Java island has been undergoing many natural disasters like floods, landslide, volcano eruption; but not earthquake in that magnitude. I wish all people can go hand in hand to help each other in the time of ordeal like this. For Yogya guys, I know you are strong enough to deal with it and we’ll do whatever we can to make things easier for you.

UPDATE from Al Jazeera

… an official at the social affairs ministry disaster task force gave a figure of 2,276, which was later revised to 2,727.

Many thousands of people have been injured and medical facilities were quickly overwhelmed.

Witnesses said hundreds of houses had collapsed in the quake. Office and government buildings were also in ruins.
