Blogger Indonesia of the Week (74): Indrani
Indrani has many first attributes here as Blogger Indonesia of the Week and as a lot of other things. First, Indrani is not a name of a person who own the blog, rather it’s an abbreviation of a couple names that is Indi and Rani. As far as I am concerned it’s the first couple who are blogging at the same blog address and posting randomly and therefore the first case where I make a blogger of the week out of two persons!
Second, Rani is the first blogger whose one of its blog content has been fully quoted and published by the only English-speaking Indonesian newspaper The Jakarta Post. Some lessons can be drawn from this:

Sumatra Powerful Earthquake
Note: Scrolldown this post for latest update
A report from Mita Valina of Reuters:
A severe earthquake shook Indonesia’s Sumatra region, destroying buildings, killing four people and injuring 21 in a toll experts said was sure to rise.
The quake destroyed nearly 800 homes and damaged buildings and infrastructure in the area.
The 8.4 magnitude earthquake, which was also felt in neighboring Singapore, Thailand and Malaysia on Wednesday, caused extensive damage to buildings along Sumatra’s coast, officials said. Some buildings had collapsed in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra north of the tremor’s epicenter, witnesses reported, while Metro TV said some buildings had caught fire.
Ramadan 2007, Schedule and Prayer Times
So, it’s confirmed now that Ramadan in Indonesia will start from tomorrow (Thursday, September 13 2007). I am glad that two biggest Indonesian Muslim organisation, NU and Muhammadiyah, are in unison to start from Thursday, despite it won’t guarantee their unity in ending it. In India, this kind of differences never take place simply because they are mostly following Hanafi School of thought theologically; and having a bit differences on other matters which are mostly political.
For those Muslims who are observing Ramadan in Indonesia Malaysia India and indeed other cities of the world you can download Ramadan fasting schedule and prayer times below. The schedule is important especially for those who are far away from mosques or not staying in Muslim neighborhood.
Ramadan in Indonesia
If there’s no sudden change of schedule during this week time, it’d be my first Ramadan (spelled in Bahasa either Ramadhan or Ramadlan) in Indonesia after so long time doing adventurous brouhaha in India during which I hadn’t returned home even once. Strangely during that “meditation time” I occasionally got time to met alll my sisters neither in Indonesia nor India. It’s in Saudi Arabia, instead.
So, now once again I have a look and feel of conditions preceding the month of fasting for Muslims which are typically Indonesia: price hike of certain commodities, controversies surrounding the start and the end of Ramadan all of which are unknown outside Indonesia which means that the fast of Ramadan has a lot of meaning to Indonesian Muslims.

Kidnapping Children for Ransom
Nobody in Indonesia feels sure as to what motivates the criminals to abduct a child to serve their purpose. One thing is clear this trend is growing and it grows at an alarming pace. The “climax” of such child abduction criminal trend was the release of Raisya, a 4-year-old pre-nursery student yesterday afternoon after being kidnapped for about 9 days in Jakarta.
As the daughter of Ali Said, the head of Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs (HIPMI) group, makes Raisya more fortunate than the other kids in the sense that her case is getting a lot of attention from the media and Indonesian establishment. No less than President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) himself made a plea to the abductor to release her sooner rather than later.

Indonesia Blooks (Book from Blog)
Photo: Cover book of Tristania Anggina blog
Some commenters on my previous posting on Blooker Awards help me in knowing Indonesian blogs which turns into book (blook). A. Umar Said’s “blog”, an Indonesian expats in France, has also published his book last couple of year (2004). And the latest in line is Tristania Anggina.
All are in Bahasa Indonesia, unfortunately. So, non-Indonesian readers/blogger couldn’t take a peek to their blogs. The only Indonesian blog in English which turns into book is A Jar of Pickles (poems onthology) written by three Indonesian poets in which Tjipoetat Quill has contributed to it.
Nevertheless, I’d like to congratulate Tristania Anggina and Tjipoetat Quill. May the publication of your blog into book could motivate other bloggers to continue blogging and writing whatever topic they enjoy writing, in English or Bahasa Indonesia
Blogger of the Week ala Tempo Interaktif
Nothing can make me happier than to see a mainstream Indonesia media like Tempo now is taking initiative to introduce blog and blogging into the ‘conventional’ audience or in other words it acknowledges the growing influence and popularity of blogging so much so that it can no longer ignore it as a temporary trend.
The news came yesterday night when blog-indonesia.com founder told me that Tempo Media will make a new feature in its online edition entitled Blog Pekan Ini (Blogger of the Week). Once I have time to browse I did find what he said. In its introduction, the Tempo online editor says
TEMPO Interaktif, Jakarta: Mulai pekan ini, Tempo Interaktif menampilkan rubrik baru Blog Pekan Ini. Kriteria pemilihannya adalah adalah Blog — berbahasa Indonesia, Inggris ataupuan daerah … (From this week, Tempo Interaktif will show a new feature i.e. Blogger of the Week. All Indonesia blogs written in English, Bahasa Indonesia or local dialect will serve the criteria to be reviewed)
Indonesia Bird Flu
A new friend (I regard everyone who sends email to me as my newly-found friend) from Canada sent me email a few days back asking me whether I could tell her about someone in Indonesia who run a blog on bird flu. She desperately wants to know the latest development of bird flu outbreak in Indonesia as she feels two main sources of Indonesia media, Jakarta Post and Antara, are not enough in covering the news.
In case you know someone who run such a blog you can contact her through her email at crof [at] shaw [dot] ca.
