Iftar Party

Iftar PartyYesterday, I was invited to attend an iftar party. It’s hosted by a political party which assured me that it’s nothing political. Iftar party which is held during holy month of Ramadan is a common practice not only here in Indonesia, but also in India. Particularly in India, iftar party is not only held and hosted by Muslims, many non-Muslims are also holding this event as a good gesture to their Muslim counterparts.  To have a clue about this term, here’s the definition:

Iftar refers to the evening meal for breaking the daily fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan. Iftar during Ramadan is often done as a community, with Muslims gathering to break their fast together. Iftar is done right after Maghrib (sunset) time. Traditionally, a date is the first thing to be consumed during Iftar when the fast is broken.

In Indonesia, the term buka puasa is more commonly used, although there is a new term recently invented gaining more popularlity that is ta’jil or takjil (pron. taajeel) with similar meaning. Literally speaking the term ta’jil refers more particualarly to breaking fast with date or drink not including a heavy meal.

So, I attended the invitation, having a light chit-chat with them on various things including current “hot” events some are off-the-record stuff and after the iftar we observed Maghrib prayer. That’s it and we do business as usual after that: go back home to continue our routines.

    salam,
    Aries
