Indonesia Former President Soeharto DiesGeneral (retired.) Soeharto, the second Indonesian president, who has been in a very critical condition for few weeks, has died today in the RSPP (Rumah Sakit Pustat Peramina) hospital Jakarta. Indonesian government has decided to have a  national mourning for seven days starting from now.  He will be buried tomorrow morning in Astana Giribangun of Central Java as per his request. Yet, the possibility that he’ll be buried in Jakarta is not ruled out, reports Detik.com.

As a human being he deserves our prayer and forgiveness; and to his big family our condolences. May God rest his soul in peace. As a statement and politician who ruled Indonesia for 32-long years, he might make mistakes. Let the law decides and take decision based on justice for all.

Update: He’s just been buried in Astana Girimangun Karangasem Jawa Tengah (Central Java) a few minutes ago (Monday, January 28, 2008). Almost all Indonesia tv channels relayed the burial proceeding live. The burial ritual finished at around 12.00 local time.

Jeremy Wagstaff writes an excellent “epitaph” for Soeharto here. He’s the kind of foreign journalist who we’d like to see a lot more. Via the Unspun

This is something that I don’t understand about Indonesia. I still remember vividly during the economy crisis when everybody was so full of hatred of Suharto. And then 10 years later he’s forgiven (?).

When are we going to proceed the real justice?

He was a great president! SO we should respect to him. But, his mistakes must be processed by Indonesian law soon. :D

For me he’s like two sides of a blade, in one hand he was honoured for building indonesian economy,in other side he did many criminal act, and practice corruption in a huge number. But personally for me, i do forgive him for all his sin, coz it would be waste of time hating people who already rest forever, isn’t it?

CMIIW
