IMO,

Soekarno technically begun his real presidency (as a dictator) in 1959 and failed miserably after only 5 years in power.
Soeharto fairly alright at the beginning but again failed in the end due to rampant corruptions and nepotisms, not to forget gross human rights violations.
Habibie was when the real change happened. Indonesian started to realize what’s democracy all about in his era. Nevertheless, he is politically immature,which ultimately brought him down.
Abdurrahman Wahid, Ugh… I felt ashame to be Indonesian everytime he open his mouth, especially with the “gitu aja kok repot…”.
Megawati, accomplish none. Mediocrity rules!
SBY, so far he is okay, though we need more.

So my list is: SBY, Habibie, Soeharto, Soekarno, Gusdur and the last is Megawati.

I won’t vote on the next election Insya Allaah.
But I think SBY still a good candidate because I want to see economic and development keep continued without any disturbance.
You know if every 5 years we have new president there will be a change of severral rules that can caused instability.

the best I think belongs to Habibie. Why? Because his regime reigned in a very short time so it’s quite difficult to judge what is his weakness. Off course the case with east timor can be excluded
sukarno and soeharto are quite the same. Both were dictator by their own styles. Gusdur & SBY are at the same level. Megawati is the worse.
Who I will vote? not sure. I plan not to come actually

I will vote for Amien Rais if he’ll be there as a candidate once more. He’s the only one that I can trust. About who’s the best? I believe it’s quite difficult to tell. But i prefer soekarno than the rest.

From the list mentioned, SBY is slightly better then others. Indonesia macro economic is ok, KPK has played good role, he solved Aceh insurgency and tsunami nicely, etc. Sukarno is the right person for that time, none of those 5 can do better then him. Things happens for reasons, i believe that. Though Megawati and Gus Dur I consider as Indonesian bad president, but surely we can learn something from them. Indonesia Zindabad…!!

i was very proud when i’ve heard this nation had a strong man named SOEKARNO. in early 1960 indonesia was appeared as the giant nation among the ASEAN’s member because of him. after that, no one can replace him as the best president until now,. he’s the best leader ever in nation father history,.. IF I COULD CHOOSE FOR 2009,. I WILL CHOOSE president who has mentality like Nazi’s Former “Adolf Hitler”. WHY?? because Indonesia need that kind of type,. so our nation can shine again and we as civil can be proud again. thanks.

Soekarno the best president? Maaan… learn your history will you??!!

When he was president, Indonesia’s economy was at its worst, even worse than the 1998 crisis (Remember 1000 percent inflation?) And he used what was left of Indonesia’s money to built many useless “mercusuar” projects.

I read somewhere that Despite many changes in government between 1949-1959, Indonesia’s economy was actually ran fairly effective. Even the process of making a new and better constitution to replace Temporary constitution of 1950 was ran fairly smooth until the part that called on to stripping off presidential rights, Soekarno came and disbanded the parliament in 1959 with his guided democracy (aka became dictator). After that Indonesia’a situation became worse as the communist thrived.

Even his role as the unifier of Indonesia is arguable, without him Indonesian was still wanted to be together. Most of Indonesia’s so called “rebel” in Soekarno’s time was against him, not for a separation (except maybe RMS and OPM). PRRI-Permesta, PKI 1948, or DI/TII was indeed rebels, but still with the term Indonesia.

He was alright as a leader before independence. After several years in power he turns into an incompetent leader. If I sound like an anti Soekarno, because I am. And sorry for Mr. Fatih for hijacking your blogs for my rants.

This is only my stupid opinion lho ya. The best Indonesian leader (not to say president) ya KH. Agus Salim. To know more about him learn by yourself, and don’t ask me here as I have no space to ‘cuap-cuap’ here. Adapun next Soekarno elected to be Indonesian Presiden, ya because he had a `clever-to-speak` ability so that he then best known as an orator. So, from my own view no one as Fatih listed above is the best. My best is Prophet Muhammad, and sure the best President of Blogged-in-English belongs to you, AF Syuhud Bhai accompanied by your Vice, AyamJANTAN, myself. Hahahaha…Kabuuurrr..

As far as my concern, if I have to choose between those mentioned people to be the next president my vote would be for SBY (but he should get better people for the vice president and all the ministers) . He deserve to re-built this country as he has done plenty of ground work these few years, it’s just a bad luck for him that few disasters happen during his period…
Shall he hasnt get any candidate for the next period, I’d surrender myself as his Vice president (anybody could pass this message to him???) :p

I still believe SBY deserves one more chance to lead Indonesia to better future and possibly will cast my vote for him again. I read one article in Kompas months ago analyzing the need for Golkar to nominate JK together with SBY again, because Golkar lacked of charismatic persons like SBY and SBY certainly needs Golkar since it is predicted that his party won’t get 15% votes in next elections. I pretty much agree with the writer’s opinion, but we should also consider that linking tightly SBY and Golkar can be backfired if government shows poor performances in remaining months before elections.

I think the next President still comes from the military and a person who has proved his performance in leading this country. And it should be remembered that the next President is not a person who always campaign in the TV but he doesn’t have real performance.

I dont think any president of Indonesia are the best one but my favorite one is Sukarno.
