Pop-up and Pop-under Ads

Posted on September 7, 2008

Every now and then I still do a blogwalking–though less frequently than it was– and I am a bit disturbed by some blogs I visited have a pop-up or pop-under ads in their websites/blogs from clicksor, game or porn sites. This is true and happens a lot especially to those who use blogger.com / blogspot. Obviously, it’s not the Google’s blogger.com/blogspot which install them. When I asked some of blog owners, they didn’t install the ads either. My suspicion is there must be a third party free services which hide the ads code into the javascript.

After doing some googling, I found many bloggers who just complain of facing the same experience. And fortunately, it seems coming mostly from the same source: rankwidget.com. So, if you have rankwidget.com in your blog to rank your alexa or technorati, just remove it to make your blog / website more visitor friendly and popups free.

The following are some stories from the popup & pop-under victims:

1. From RankWidget Injecting Clicksor Ads on Your Site

My good friend has asked my help late this afternoon regarding the reported pop-up under advertisements that comes out from her site. Upon verification, I was surprised to see that it is not just the pop-up under that was added but a clicksor contextual ad is also implemented. My friend is not that tech-savvy to be able implement such kind of changes so I asked myself if I helped her before. Upon convincing myself that we didn’t implement clicksor on her site, I started digging on the codes.

To my surprise, no clicksor code is existing in the templates or even in the widgets. No plugins either that implements clicksor and not even with mightyadsense entries. It is by that time that I decided to remove one-by-one all the javascript from various sources that she implemented that I was able to isolate the problem. Upon removing the technorati rank widget provided by RankWidget, the popup-under went off and the contextual ads no longer showed. For the benefit of the doubt, I re-added the technorati widget and viola…. I see porn popup-under. It’s confirmed that the culprit is that widget.

2. From the Day the Ads Came Over

I had the same problem on my page just the other day so I started taking all my third party (javascript) off my page one at a time the ads were coming from www.rankwidget.com. I removed those widgets and haven’t had a problem since. Just to be sure I added them back to my blog and the ads came back”

So, be careful with a third party widget or gadget –as blogger.com now tends to call it. They may contain a hidden ads which you are even unaware of. Especially annoying if the ads are in the form of pop-up and/or pop-under which is known so disturbing both to the blog owner and blog visitors. Rankwidget.com should not the only one which did it.

For those who need to know the terms pop-up & pop-under ads here’s from Wikipedia:

Pop-up ads or popups are a form of online advertising on the World Wide Web intended to attract web traffic or capture email addresses. It works when certain web sites open a new web browser window to display advertisements. The pop-up window containing an advertisement is usually generated by JavaScript, but can be generated by other means as well.

A variation on the pop-up window is the pop-under advertisement, which opens a new browser window hidden under the active window. Pop-unders do not interrupt the user immediately and are not seen until the covering window is closed, making it more difficult to determine which web site opened them.

Hey, I think is a great idea to publish those blogs who have this pop-up ads (based on something you discovered). Next, we can send a messages to blog owner about this.

(case example)
A: Hey, your site has pop-up ads. Do you put it?
B: Yes it is. I find some money from it.
A: (say inside very2 deep heart) You are banned from my blogwalking list

It’s hard speaking something here (my english bad)
