Internationally acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been sentenced to six years of prison, and banned from directing and producing films, writing scripts, travelling abroad, and giving interviews to both domestic and foreign media for 20 years.

Panahi, who is a known fervent supporter of the opposition Green Movement in Iran, was arrested over charges of “colluding in the gathering and making of propaganda against the regime.”

Panahi had been arrested in July 2009 for mourning protesters killed after the presidential election. Despite being released, he was denied permission to exit Iran, and was unable to take his seat as a juror in the Cannes film festival – his seat was left symbolically vacant. He was then arrested in February 2010, and has remained jailed since then.

Muhammad Rasoulof, a fellow filmmaker also arrested at the same time, was also sentenced to six years of prison.

From Time: […] Panahi said, “When a filmmaker does not make films, it is as if he is jailed. Even when he is freed from the small jail, he finds himself wandering in a larger jail.” This was when he thought he would be forbidden from pursuing his art, craft and life’s blood. “A finished film, well, it can get banned,” he said, “but not the director.” Now we know a director — this most estimable one — can get banned, imprisoned, shut up and locked in. And if all the muscle of the United States and the European Union can’t stop Iran from its nuclear dream, how can a directors’ petition convince the Ayatullahs to give freedom to a filmmaker who dared to tell the truth about his country?

From The Guardian: Hamid Dabashi, a professor of Iranian studies at Columbia University, told the Guardian the sentence showed Iran’s leaders could not tolerate the arts. “This is a catastrophe for Iran’s cinema,” he said. “Panahi is now exactly in the most creative phase of his life and by silencing him at this sensitive time, they are killing his art and talent. Dabashi said: “What Iran is doing with the artists, is exactly similar to what Taliban did in Afghanistan. This is exactly like bombing Buddha statues by the Taliban, Iran is doing the same with its artists.”

From the iPetitions site: The truth is that Jafar Panahi is innocent and his only crime is wishing to continue to freely exercise his profession as a filmmaker in Iran. Over the last few months the Iranian government has put into place against him nothing short of a machine of war in order to destroy him, while locking him up to silence him.

Panahi

From New Statesman: Although before we let any self-righteousness creep into our indignation, we should remember that the West doesn’t have a spotless record in hospitality toward this most beleaguered filmmaker. Panahi has had his share of mistreatment in the West: he was once kept shackled in a cell at JFK airport by US immigration after refusing to be photographed and fingerprinted.
