وجهت مدونة يوم الأحد اتهاماً لموقع فيس بوك بعدم سماحه للمستخدمين إنشاء صفحات أو Community Pages ترد فيها كلمة “Palestinian”، مما أثار غضباً في أوساط النشطاء الحقوقيين والمدافعين عن حقوق الفلسطينيين.
Yesterday, reports emerged on the blogosphere suggesting that Facebook was blocking users from creating Pages featuring the word “Palestinian,” causing uproar amongst human and Palestinian rights activists.

Individuals tested the claim, and came up with varied results; some successfully created Pages, while others were greeted with a message stating that the name of the Page violates Guidelines or contains a word or phrase that is blocked in order to prevent the creation of unofficial or prohibited Pages.

According to several blog posts, the filter seems to have only been recently introduced, but as of today, Pages containing the word are being created with no problems.

From Gawker: What’s curious about the claims of censorship is that censors are supposed to have an agenda. If Facebook has one, it seems to be against anything vaguely controversial: Both pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian forces are outraged by mysterious deletions of Facebook content mentioning the current crisis. What’s really going on? The site’s self-policing mechanisms, which allow users to report “inappropriate content,” seem to be to blame. The flagging system, meant to prevent the posting of porn where minors can see it, is easily abused by people with a political agenda. And with only 800 employees overseeing 140 million users, it’s impossible for Facebook customer service to keep up with all the disputes.

جاء في مدونة “جيليان يورك”: “على امتداد الأسبوع الماضي، حصلت على تقارير من عدد من الأشخاص تعرضت صفحاتهم الخاصة للحذف أو تم إلغاؤها من منتدى فيسبوك. في البداية توصلت بذلك من صديق بالمغرب، ثم من صديقة مغربية ببوسطن، ثم من سيدة هندية بالمملكة المتحدة، ثم من الكثيرين بعد ذلك. عندما بحثت بشكل أعمق في الموضوع وتحدثت لكل واحد من أولئك الأشخاص، اكتشفت الأمر الذي كان مشتركا بينهم: كل واحد منهم كان ينتقد الإسلام (بعضهم ملحد، البعض الآخر كان مسلما في السابق، والبعض يحمل أفكار إصلاحية) وكانوا ينشرون باستمرار مقالات حول الدين ويحينون وضعيتهم في نفس الاتجاه”.

From Jillian C. York’s blog: Over the course of the past week, I’ve gotten reports from a number of people whose personal Facebook pages have been removed or deleted from the Facebook platform. At first, it was a male friend in Morocco. Then a female, Moroccan friend in Boston. Then an Indian woman in the UK. And then even more. Once I investigated a bit further and spoke to each of them, I discovered what each of them have in common: All of them are critical of Islam (some are atheists, others ex-Muslims, still others reformers) and post frequently articles and status updates about the religion.

Another post by Jillian C. York mentioned that there are 1200 Pages with the word “Palestinian” in them, which she believes suggests the word was recently blacklisted. She also mentions that as of July 26 at 8.17 DST, the word Palestinian is no longer blocked. In a note, she included: “I am not implying some vast Facebook conspiracy against Palestinians, just demonstrating yet another example of Facebook’s inconsistency, lack of attention to human rights, and lack of appeals processes.”
